Covid-19: NZ experiencing highest peak in 18 months, says epidemiologist Michael Baker
Posted on :

According to epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker, New Zealand is experiencing the highest surge in COVID-19 cases since December 2022. The recent spike highlights the ongoing challenges the country faces in managing the pandemic.

Surge in Covid-19 Cases

The Health Ministry’s latest report indicates a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, with 6146 new infections and 19 additional deaths recorded last week. This marks a substantial increase from the previous week, which saw 3922 new cases.

Data Sources and Hospital Admissions

Professor Baker explained that the data primarily comes from wastewater testing, which has been a reliable indicator of community transmission. Hospital admissions have also increased, with approximately 35 people being hospitalized daily due to Covid-19.

Contagious Period and Isolation Recommendations

One in three individuals remains contagious five days after testing positive, Baker noted. Although the recommended isolation period is now five days, he advises those still testing positive to retest on day six or seven before resuming normal activities. This cautious approach aims to reduce the risk of further spreading the virus.

Funding for COVID-19 Response

Professor Baker emphasizes the need for continued government funding in the upcoming Budget to support the Covid-19 response. He advocates for the ongoing provision of booster shots, RAT tests, and antiviral medications, stressing that these resources are crucial for public health and productivity. Without government support, low-income households may struggle to afford these essential measures, leading to inequities in health outcomes.

Importance of Booster Shots

Prioritizing booster shots remains critical, especially for individuals over 30 who are eligible for a booster every six months. While the vaccine may not completely prevent infection, it activates the immune system in a way that reduces the severity of illness, thereby lowering the risk of hospitalization and death.

Advocacy for mask-wearing

Baker also strongly encourages the use of face masks, particularly N95 respirators, which offer a better seal around the mouth and nose. A recent study involving Baker demonstrated that mask-wearing effectively reduces the spread of respiratory infections, including Covid-19.

Conclusion

New Zealand’s current peak in COVID-19 cases underscores the importance of continued vigilance and public health measures. Professor Michael Baker’s insights highlight the need for sustained government funding and adherence to recommended safety practices to manage and mitigate the impact of the virus.
